You’re probably familiar with kale, wheatgrass, and turmeric.

Health enthusiasts hold these three food items in high esteem, given their obvious nutritional benefits.

Moringa has recently entered the health arena and found its unique pedestal. As a “wonder tree,” its various parts come with nutritional value that exceeds those found in foods that we consume daily.

For example, moringa contains twice as much protein as kale, almost a hundred times more B2, and supersedes kale’s iron content four times. It beats wheatgrass in protein, calcium, and vitamin K content. Moringa also tops turmeric in anti-inflammatory properties.

Most of the plant’s parts have nutritious value: its pods, flowers, leaves, bark, and nuts all have something to offer.

And that’s not all.

The plant is armed with bioactive and antioxidant compounds fit for your physical and mental needs.

What Is Moringa?

farmer standing next to moringa tree

Moringa, also known scientifically as Moringa oleifera, is a “power tree” that has been used for centuries to cure headaches, improve immune system function, regulate weight and weight loss, and boost libido.

Moringa belongs to the Moringaceae family and is common in Africa and Asia. It’s been studied and proven to help handle diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and non-alcoholic liver disease.

Moringa contains a significant amount of bioactive compounds. The extensive combination of vitamins, phenolic acids, and alkaloids are found primarily in the plant’s leaves.

Together, these compounds give moringa its pharmaceutical properties.

In some instances, moringa leaves have been used to treat typhoid, malaria, diabetes, and hypertension in developing countries—mainly in Asia and Africa.

Moringa’s Wonder Nutrients

  • Moringa is high in protein and amino acids. These two nutrients account for 30% of its weight. As a result, it rivals milk, which has a protein weight of 35%.
  • Fresh moringa leaves have higher beta carotene and vitamin A content than that found in pumpkin and carrot.
  • Moringa exceeds oranges in vitamin C content and dairy products in calcium. It also beats spinach and bananas in iron and potassium content, respectively.
Moringa has been proved to contain roughly 15 times the amount of potassium found in bananas, and seven times the amount of vitamin C in oranges.
Moringa leaves contain 200 mg of vitamin C per 100g of concentration.
  • Moringa’s seed oil is commercially known as behen oil. Behen has phytochemicals and a fatty acid content that is healthier than most commercial hydrogenated oils.
These oils are also chemically referred to as saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (SFA/MUFA).

Moringa’s Nutritional Profile

Moringa-Gram-per-Gram-Profile

Moringa’s leaves are rich in various minerals such as potassium, calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, copper, and phosphorus.

Other parts of the moringa plant that are edible include the stem, bark, pods, and root. All these are high in carbohydrates, with the leaves having the highest overall concentration of minerals.

Immature flowers and pods are also edible and are famous for their high amount of fatty acids.

The table below breaks down the nutritional composition of moringa’s edible parts for every 100 g of dry weight:

Essential Bioactive Compounds in the Moringa Plant

Moringa’s bioactive components empower it with properties capable of enhancing disease treatment and prevention.

Moringa has been proven to be anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, cardioprotective (guards the heart), and hepatoprotective (mitigates liver injury).

These compounds form two main metabolite groups:

  • Primary metabolites: These are the compounds involved in physiological functions (body growth and reproduction) and include proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides
  • Secondary metabolites: These are minor compounds that are needed by the body in only trace amounts. They include phenolic compounds, halogenated compounds, and terpenes. Collectively, these compounds work to fight chronic diseases such as cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

Let’s take a deeper look at some essential moringa compounds that aid in treating and preventing various diseases.

#1: Essential Vitamins

moringa is richer in vitamins than most vegetables

Fresh moringa leaves have an abundance of carotenoids that form vitamin A. Vitamin A is a catalyst of good vision, embryonic growth and development, reproduction, cell differentiation, and immune competence.

Vitamin A also aids in the management of eye problems, like night blindness, and inhibits the development of cataracts (opaqueness of eye lenses).

Moringa leaves are also rich in vitamin E, with nutrient concentrations matching those found in nuts.

#2: Anti-Inflammatory Compounds

moringa has anti-inflammatory properties

Moringa’s anti-inflammatory effects can be attributed to components such as alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, and tannins.

Moringa reduces inflammation by working against inflammatory proteins and enzymes in the body. Its leaf concentrate plays a significant role in inhibiting inflammation in cells.

#3: Antimicrobial Compounds

Moringa’s leaves contain essential oils which produce an antimicrobial and antifungal effect.

For best results, leaf extracts are typically used in conjunction with alcoholic extracts derived from the plant’s seeds. Moringa’s root, stem, and bark extract also have antimicrobial qualities.

Dry moringa leaves are a powerful source of phenolic acids and flavonoids (collectively called polyphenol compounds). These flavonoids include quercetin, myricetin and kaempferol. The benefits of each category are further broken down as follows:

  • Phenolic acids belong to phenolic compounds, which originate from hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids. These compounds exhibit antioxidant, antimutagenic (impede cell mutation), anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties.
  • Flavonoids have been observed to protect against diseases caused by oxidative stress, including certain types of cancer and ailments of cardiovascular origin.
  • Quercetin is an antioxidant with therapeutic benefits, which reduces hyperlipidemia (bad cholesterol) and atherosclerosis (building of fats in artery walls), and protects insulin-producing cells.

Quercetin also protects the liver from damage while increasing its protein content.

#4: Anticarcinogenic Compounds

Moringa has several compounds in its leaves and seeds that have been proven to be effective against lung, skin, breast, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers.

Tannins are contained in dry moringa leaves and have water-soluble properties. Tannins are anti-cancer in nature. They protect against toxins, inflammation, and coronary heart disease.

#5: Antioxidants

moringa helps in your detox efforts

Moringa has a variety of antioxidants in its seeds, leaves, and flowers. These are essentially polyphenols that exhibit a high antioxidant capacity.

Moringa also comes packed with ascorbic acid, which creates insulin secretion. This provides an anti-diabetic effect.

Antioxidants are also responsible for managing inflammation and stress of the brain. Moringa’s antioxidants are neuro-enhancers, and have been used to treat instances of Alzheimer’s disease.

Moringa’s vitamins C and E also improve brain functionality by inhibiting neuronal degradation. At the same time, they help in memory function by normalizing the neurotransmitters’ serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine levels.

Consequently, these antioxidant effects control stress and pleasure stimuli in people, including those suffering from psychosis and depression.

#6: Glycosides and β-sitostero

Moringa has glycosides and β-sitosterol in its leaves and seeds. These two substances collectively lower blood pressure (by regulating the body’s lipid profile) and reduce cholesterol levels.

Moringa leaves package saponins, which inhibit the absorption of plasma cholesterol, consequently moderating the circulation of bile acids.

Making a smoothie seems simple enough; you just add some fruit, leafy greens, and juice to a blender and like magic you get a delicious nutrient packed plant-based meal in a cup. In reality, making the perfect smoothie requires a sort of craft, as well as intuition. Does it need more yogurt? More berries? More nut butter? Are you going for frozen yogurt consistency or something less thick?

Smoothies are a great way to fuel your body with nutrients that you may not be getting in your regular diet. Figuring out how to make a smoothie that meets your lifestyle and dietary needs takes some time and research, but once you find that perfect combination you will be making smoothies like a pro.

4 Tips to Make a Healthy Moringa Smoothie

When people first start making smoothies, they focus on trying to mask the bitter and unappetizing taste of leafy greens and other healthy boosters by using large quantities of fruit and juice. Although fruit is healthy, it is high in sugar, so try not to add too much. Adding superfoods like moringa can give your smoothie the extra advantage. Ultimately, it is all about finding a balance between tasting good and being healthy—and enjoying your creation, of course!

Triple Berry Moringa Smoothie

Triple Berry Moringa Smoothie

We regularly enjoy smoothies at Kuli Kuli, and are regularly offering each other tips and suggestions for how to make the healthiest, most delicious smoothie.

Before getting to our top tips, let’s slow it down a bit and consider this: what do you want your smoothie to do?

There are so many different recipes and possible ingredients. It can be daunting or overwhelming to start. Do a little research and figure out your intenttion: are you looking for a post-exercise recovery smoothie, a morning “you got this” smoothie, or a smoothie that kids would love?

What Does Your Smoothie Need?

If you want a meal replacement look for ingredients that will give you the same nutritional benefits as a meal you may normally have. Same goes for any individual who may want to increase their protein, fiber, or iron intake in their diet. It’s also a great idea to change your ingredients from time to time, as a mixed veggie and fruit assortment is ideal.

We created this little table, based on top requests for smoothie additions.

Weight Loss (Detox) If you’re looking for a way to lose some weight while still getting all the vitamins and minerals our Organic Smoothie Mix is perfect for you.
Protein (Plant Based) If you’re vegan and want a protein-packed smoothie after a workout or for a hearty breakfast, you want to find a plant based protein smoothie.
Fatigue (Iron) A great way to deal with fatigue is to increase the intake of iron-rich foods. Implementing iron rich foods into your smoothie will give you an extra pick me up!
Anti-Inflammatory Inflammation is the leading cause of pain, especially in conditions like arthritis. To help reduce inflammation and relive some of your pain, reach for an anti-inflammatory smoothie recipes to fuel your summer.

The bottom line is this: personalize your smoothie, and think about what you want from it. Now that we’ve covered some key factors, let’s move into our four tried-and-true tips.

Tip #1 – Customize and build your smoothie.

It will take some trial and error to find your perfect and healthy recipe. You do not want to start off with a super potent smoothie. Your taste buds  may have not completely adapted to the flavor, and you want to give your body time to adapt and learn how to absorb all the new nutrients.

Adding ingredients little by little will make it easy on your body as well as taste buds and ultimately help you enjoy your perfect smoothie. Moringa is definitely a superfood you would want to build up to because of how nutrient dense it is. Everyone’s body reacts differently to it so figuring out how much of it you should use is completely up to listening to your body.

Tip #2 – Not All Blenders Are Created Equal

It’s a truth that all of us smoothie makers have to reconcile: blenders vary in quality. If you can, invest in a nice piece of machinery! It might be the difference between a smoothie with icy chunks, and a smoothe masterpiece.

Supergreen Moringa Smoothie

Supergreen Moringa Smoothie

Although there are so many blenders with different features at multiple price points, it is key to take these three main functions into consideration: the sharpness of the blades, the power of the motor, and the ability to control the speed. All these features will allow you to make smoothies without having to deal with all the problems that a faulty blender can pose.

Smoothies are suppose to be an easy alternative to cooking and meal prepping. So take some time reading consumer reviews online and doing your own research to help determine the right all blender.

Tip #3 –  Practice the Art of Listening (to your body)

Everyone’s body is different and it is important to pay attention to how your body reacts to the different ingredients that you use in your smoothies. What may be the recommended serving for one person may vary person to person.

Sometimes you may have to add more or less of an ingredient for your body to really take in all the health benefits. It’s all about experimenting and figuring out what works best for you.

Tip # 4 – Our Recommended Portions

Now that we have the basics, it’s time to learn what it takes to make the perfect healthy smoothie. Here’s our insight when it comes to frozen fruit, thickeners, leafy greens, moringa and more!

  • Limit to 1 cup of frozen fruit (per serving)

Anything greater than this just increases the amount of sugar in the smoothie. Adding fruits that are high in acid like pineapple or berries help mask any bitterness from added leafy greens. The frozen fruit will also make your smoothie slushie, without having to pour in extra ice.

This is a great factor during warmer months when you need something that feels fresh.

  • Play with 1/2 – 1 cup of  a “thickener”

Typically you want to use something that is high in probiotics like Kefir or greek yogurt. Adding a thickener will give your smoothie a creamy consistency while also helping to promote a healthy gut. It is also a good opportunity to get an extra protein boost! If vegan, adding half an avocado will also create that same creamy consistency, and will also include healthy fats into your smoothie.

Adding a cup of kale or spinach is great and they do add some nutritional value, but in comparison to moringa, they fall behind. Moringa is extremely nutrient dense and is packed with vitamins, minerals, and all 9 amino acids. It also adds things like iron and fiber to give you an extra boost.

Moringa smoothie

Moringa smoothie with peanut butter and chia seeds

It is an efficient and convenient way to get all the nutrition you need, and also a way to help children get the nutrients they need too.

  • Adjust with 1/2 – 1 cup of liquids

Look into healthier alternatives like coconut water, cashew milk, almond milk, or soy milk to add as a liquid to your smoothie. Adding juice increases the amount of sugar and displaces the healthy balance of the recommended sugar serving.

You want a nourishing snack, not a sugary one. Having too much of something will prevent you from truly gaining any  nutritional value from your smoothie.

  • Personalize your smoothie with boosters

Boosters are a great way to personalize and customize your smoothie to your specific needs. Adding nutrient boosters like camu camu, almond butter, spirulina, or chlorophyll are great to improve and stimulate better health. It is crucial to not over do the amount of boosters you use. It is recommended to use 2-3 boosters.

Using too many, takes away and prevents your body from being able to absorb everything. No need to overload.

  • Get Creative with Toppings

This is the fun part of making a smoothie. Once your done crafting your perfect healthy smoothie you can add toppings to make it your own.

Adding things like goji berries or seeds will really make a difference in your smoothie recipe. Chia seeds are a great example of a type of topping to add at the end, but unless they are soaked they provide little nutritional value.

If you add seeds as a topping and let them soak while you drink your smoothie, they will grow a gelatinous coating, and give you the maximum nutrients.

Healthy “shots” like the one featured here are great additions to any routine. Nutrient-dense foods like moringa, combined with healthy routines, can enhance a person’s overall sense of health and wellbeing. This apple cider vinegar and moringa shot is a powerful infusion that helps the immune system stay strong.

At Kuli Kuli, we know that there isn’t just “one magical plant” or supplement that can fix everything or offer a “cure-all.” We offer an article on The Science of Nourishing Immunity if you would like to learn more about how moringa can contribute to a healthy body.

Analyzing the Ingredients

This herbal “flu shot” (not to replace an actual flu shot!) is an infusion of apple cider vinegar, herbs, spices, moringa leaf powder, and raw honey. Let’s take a closer look at what goes into it and why it matters.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar–this tangy, alkaline liquid helps give your body a stronger immunity to bacteria and viruses.
  2. Ginger–great for digestion and deliciously spicy, ginger is also filled with antioxidants and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties.
  3. Echinacea–this beautiful plant also has immune-boosting properties and has been shown to be effective in preventing colds and reducing cold recovery time.
  4. Moringa–high in vitamins, minerals, and potassium this leafy green reduces inflammation and fights free radicals in the body. Check out our Top 10 Reasons to Eat Moringa Everyday
  5. Raw Honey–did you know that raw honey is antibacterial, antifungal, and filled with antioxidants? Raw honey is also a great home remedy for a sore throat.
  6. Lemon–this well-known citrus fruit is full of vitamins, essential nutrients, and antioxidants. Lemon is also an antibacterial which makes it great for fighting off common infections such as the cold and throat infections.
  7. Rose Hips–extremely high in vitamin C, this vibrant fruit is a powerful antioxidant and has been shown to strengthen the immune system.
  8. Black Peppercorns–this household spice contains vitamins and minerals, as well as helping to ease nasal congestion. Black pepper is also used in Ayurvedic medicine as a cold and cough remedy.

Please note: this recipe will need to infuse for at least three weeks in the refrigerator so that the herbs have time to properly hydrate and infuse into the liquid! Although not stated for every ingredient, I recommend and encourage the use of organic, pesticide-free ingredients.

Recipe: Moringa Apple Cider Vinegar Shot

As with any infusion, you want to be using the highest quality products available that are free from chemicals and contaminants.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ c raw apple cider vinegar

DIY: Moringa Apple Cider Vinegar shot!

  • 1 echinacea tea bag or 1 tablespoon loose, dried echinacea
  • ½ Tbsp freshly grated ginger
  • 1 Tbsp moringa powder
  • ¼ c raw, local honey
  • Juice and zest of 1 organic lemon
  • 1 rose hip tea bag or 1 tablespoon loose, dried rose hips
  • ½ tsp black peppercorns

Instructions:

  1. Prep your lemon and ginger
  2. Add all dry ingredients into a glass jar and pour the apple cider vinegar over them
  3. Add your lemon and ginger into the jar with the rest of the ingredients
  4. Put a lid on your glass jar and give the mixture a good shake
  5. Set aside in the refrigerator and let the ingredients infuse for at least three weeks
  6. Shake the mixture every so often so that the ingredients don’t settle for too long. This is so that the ingredients can properly hydrate and infuse into the liquid.
  7. After the three weeks has passed, remove the mixture from the fridge and strain the liquid out. Be sure to compost any food waste!
  8. Mix the honey into the strained liquid and put in a jar or glass container that you can easily pour from.
  9. Drink a shot (about 1.5 oz) everyday to help keep your immune system strong and during illness to help you recover!

Note: you don’t need to add the honey to this mixture until it is done infusing! Feel free to add the honey after 3 weeks when the mixture has been strained.

A Healthy, Energizing Powerhouse

This herbal wellness shot REALLY packs a punch! You only need a small “shot” or a few sips a day. If you find it hard to sip on plain (the ginger and apple cider vinegar give it a strong, tart flavor) you can add a spoonful to your favorite green juice or mix it into a cup of hot water for wellness tea. Maybe make one with a housemate or spouse, and down it as a “shot!” If you mix it into hot water, the honey should help neutralize the tart flavor.

What are your favorite make-it-yourself “shots?” Let us know in the comments!

Need something fun for your gal and guy pals? Try this bright and cheerful green chilli moringa-tini for your next party. This drink will not disappoint and is sure to impress with it’s unique ingredients.

The beautiful color is all natural and packed with nutrients, thanks to the moringa. Coconut water and lime juice give it a tropical zesty taste while the St. George’s Green Chili Vodka takes it up a notch with a spicy kick!

You can get creative with the garnish. I chose to dangle a bunch of cilantro to add some elegance along with a lime slice for a bit of pizazz.

You could also garnish with a few jalapeno peppers if you are feeling bold!

Garnish with a few lovely sprigs of cilantro.

Ingredients

Serves 3- 4

Directions

  • Mix all ingredients together in a sealed container and shake until combined.
  • Pour mixture into martini glasses and enjoy with a garnish of choice.

Cheers, we hope you and your friends enjoy this Green Chili Moringa-tini!

One pop star once complained about being unsure of wanting something hot or cold.  Luckily, with this recipe, there isn’t a need to make a decision.  Introducing, the Moringa Latte!  A drink just as tasty over ice as it is in a warm mug.

An alternative to coffee or hot chocolate is a green powder known as matcha. Popular in Japan, matcha is whole ground green tea leaves made into a fine powder. Used in traditional tea ceremonies using a wooden “whisk,” matcha has been commercialized into the production of numerous confections and desserts, creating brightly colored green delicacies.

Still, matcha contains caffeine and while it is high in amino acids, it’s not as nutrient-dense as some other “green” foods, one of them being moringa.  For a head to head comparison of matcha and moringa, click here!  Given moringa’s versatility as one of the healthiest green superfoods, here is an alternative to the hot (or iced, for all you summer folk) matcha latte using moringa!

INGREDIENTS

  • 8-10 oz. Milk or milk alternative (if you don’t have any lying around, throw some raw nuts into a strong blender with water or just use hot water!)
  • 1 Tbsp Moringa powder
  • 1-3 tsp agave or honey

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Heat 8-10 ounces of your favorite milk, milk alternative, or water on the stove using a small pot. You can use a microwave to speed up this process, but be careful not to overheat the milk.
  • When the milk begins to bubble, turn off the heat.
  • Add in 1 Tbsp of Moringa powder and 1-3 tsp of agave or honey to sweeten to taste. Use a whisk (metal works, but if you have a wooden tea whisk or Molinillo, even better) to mix in and froth the beverage.
  • Pour into a cup and enjoy!

For the iced version, mix all ingredients into a blender. Blend the drink well and pour over a half a cup of ice.

The Moringa “Matcha” Latte, a fantastic alternative to a classic drink that can help nourish your body and the world. Safe for kids, a pick me up for adults, and absolutely delicious!  Test subjects have reported an increase in energy from this beverage.

Meet the Moringa Vanilla Spice Latte, a warm beverage perfect for your autumn mornings. Made with a creamy coconut milk and froth, a blend of anti-inflammatory spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamon, and Kuli Kuli Organic Moringa Greens & Protein Vanilla. Isothiocyanates, the key anti-inflammatory agent produced by moringa, are similar to those found in cruciferous vegetables. To learn more, see our recent post comparing the anti-inflammatory properties in moringa vs turmeric.
