Company Description:

As a PeaceCorp volunteer in Niger, Lisa Curtis often turned to moringa leaves when her diet left her with little energy. Locals wrapped the leaves around a peanut snack and called it kuli kuli. In 2014, energized both by the plant’s nutrients and by the idea of launching the next superfood in the U.S., Curtis created a company that sold moringa bars, sourcing the leaves from the village she had lived in. That proved too expensive, and the company now has moringa farms in 13 different countries and seeks to employ small women farmers. Still, Curtis got her big break when a buyer from Whole Foods saw her stand at a farmer’s market, and paved the way for Kuli Kuli to get into the chain’s Northern California stores. Now the company’s moringa-based bars, energy shots, teas, and powders are available in Albertson’s and Walmart as well. –Gabrielle Bienasz

The Secret of Sneaky Greens

It’s hard to deny that daily greens are needed in our everyday diet. But when there’s only 3 meals in your day, it may feel impossible to find time for the full 5-13 recommended servings of vegetables.

Have no fear, sneaky greens are here! Sneaking greens into your favorite daily recipes is one of the easiest ways to start incorporating the vitamins and nutrients you need from a dose of veggies. So, what does it look like to sneak greens into a family favorite recipe? Let’s start with a breakfast classic, a hearty bowl of oatmeal, plus our favorite sneaky green, moringa!

Moringa Powder and Umpqua Oats

Why You Should Eat Oatmeal Everyday

The phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” has meaning! A bowl of oatmeal in the morning is not only a delicious way to start your day but is a great low-glycemic meal. Meals that are low-glycemic keep you feeling full and satiated for hours, as well as provide a good source of energy to fuel your morning without a dramatic spike in blood sugar. When a bowl of oats is combined with additional ingredients such as antioxidant rich berries, flax seeds, and nuts, you have a perfectly balanced breakfast.

Similar to finding time to eat your daily greens, we know that finding time for all 3 meals in general can be difficult in a busy lifestyle. That’s why our friends at Umpqua Oats have found a convenient and delicious way to bring you a balanced bowl of oatmeal with ease. All that’s needed now are those energizing sneaky greens!

The Easiest Moringa Oatmeal Recipe

Moringa Oatmeal is the perfect way to start your morning with a fulfilling breakfast, a serving of vegetables, and unmatched uplifting benefits. Organic Moringa Powder has a taste similar to that of matcha and can be paired perfectly with tart flavors, like Umpqua’s Apple Cranberry Custom Milled Oatmeal, or nutty flavors, such as the Maple Pecan Oatmeal Cup. By just adding 1 tsp of Kuli Kuli’s Pure Moringa Powder to any cup of Umpqua’s Custom Milled Oatmeal, you’ll have an easy and nourishing breakfast that the whole family can enjoy. Here are the details!

7 Tips to Host a Winning Super Bowl Party

Are you ready for some football!? The big game is right around the corner and if you are hosting a football viewing party with family, friends, and neighbors, here are seven tips to help make your game day party a total touchdown.

1. Create a Checklist

This first tip may sound obvious, but making a list beforehand of everything you need to do and shop for in order to prepare for your game day hosting party is critical. Don’t forget healthy snacks for the foodies in your family!

Tip: If you plan on hosting multiple game day viewing parties later this year, print out a paper copy of your official game day checklist then laminate it and use a dry erase marker to check off every item on your to do list once it’s complete, that way you can reuse your list multiple times for each and every game.

2. Plan Event Set-Up in Advance

When it comes to hosting a game day viewing party, make sure you have enough chairs and tables available so everyone has a seat to watch the big game. Although some guests may prefer to stand, it’s always nice to have a seat when it comes time to eat all of the delicious football-inspired food!

3. Throw Together your Best Game Day Gear

Are you a Chiefs or 49ers fan? No matter the team, be sure to rep their colors on game day. Order some temporary team tattoos prior to game day to share with your crew. You can even purchase some non toxic face paint to take your team spirit to the next level!

4. Get the Kids Involved

Moringa CookiesIf your football party guest list includes younger children, make them an integral part of the game-day experience. Have them create a family-friendly music playlist, let them decorate your living room or wherever the game will be watched and ask them to help create some of the menu items like freshly baked homemade cookies. This will make your life on game day a whole lot easier 😉.

5. Make a Winning Menu

Super Bowl viewing party menus can range from simple snacks to more elaborate dishes. Some side dishes can include baked beans, chips and dips, fruit and vegetable platters, grilled corn on the cob and pasta salads. Don’t forget dessert! Some football fan favorites include homemade brownies, cookies and cupcakes. Tailor your game day menu to you and your guests’ taste buds, but anything goes when it comes to tailgating.

Valentine's Moringa Cupcakes

Tip: When it comes to planning your football menu, consider your guests and their taste preferences. Will there be children present or just adults? Are there any dietary restrictions? These are all questions to keep in mind when planning your winning menu!

6. Don’t Forget to Have Fun

When planning your football viewing party, strive for an event that appeals to the entire group and all ages! Enlist the help of your guests if needed and get everyone involved. At the end of the day, no matter whether your team wins or loses, it’s all about making memories with family, friends and your community so have fun and make it a good time for all.

7. BUT Also Clean Up!

When it comes to cleaning up, keep things simple. Clearly label recycling bins so guests know where to place water bottles, cans and glass bottles. Place multiple trash cans around your home or event space so guests are never unsure of where to place used napkins and plates. After guests leave, be sure to do a quick lap around your home to search for any stains that may have joined the party. The sooner you tackle those the better.

This past Wednesday was #NationalGlutenFreeDay. Gluten-free seems to be everywhere these days. There isn’t a restaurant out there that doesn’t have a gluten-free option now, and even most bakeries are offering gluten-free options. However, the question seems to remain if going gluten-free is a fad that will fade or if it is here to stay?

So, What is Gluten?

The answer to this question is not a simple yes or no, it’s a bit more complex than that. Let’s start off with what gluten is. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, rye, barley, and bulgur. In order for our bodies to utilize a protein, it must be broken down into individual amino acids. However, humans do not have the enzyme that can completely breakdown a gluten peptide chain into these individual amino acids. Therefore, every time a gluten-containing food is ingested, there are tiny tears to the gut lining. Most people do not even notice the discomfort from these tears, and some people have healthy enough gut linings that these little tears are easily repaired.

And What is Gluten Intolerance?

However, if you are someone that experiences bloating, gas, discomfort, and even fatigue after eating gluten containing foods, then you might not be healing from these micro-tears well. These little tears are creating pain, discomfort, and inflammation in the body. Inflammation is one of the ways that our body tries to heal. This is why gluten is taken out of so many diets, to reduce the burden and inflammation that is created by eating gluten!

This is why going gluten-free can benefit people even if they do not have Celiac Disease (an autoimmune condition that is triggered by gluten).

If you experience any of these symptoms it might be worth trying to go gluten-free for a bit to see if that offers some relief:

  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Headaches
  • Gas
  • Fatigue
  • Skin Problems (Psoriasis,  Alopecia, Urticaria)
  • Depression
  • Weight Gain

No Need to Fear, Gluten-Free Baking is still here!

Now if you are feeling sad and frustrated that you won’t be able to enjoy pasta, bread, and pastries anymore, have no fear!! There are SO many great gluten-free options out there now! There are pastas made from chickpeas and lentils, bread made from rice and quinoa, the recipes are endless!

Below is a recipe for gluten-free brownies that utilize some superfood powerhouses – Organic Pure Moringa, coconut oil, almond flour, and avocado! If you are thinking this might just be the hippiest recipe you’ve ever seen, then you might just be right! However, it is packed with tons of nutrients from the moringa powder, energy from the avocado and coconut oil, all while packing tons of great flavor!

Gluten-Free Moringa Avocado Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1 Ripe Banana
  • 1 Avocado
  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 Tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ cup almond flour
  • ½ cup moringa powder
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350F.
  2. In a stand mixer or with hand mixer, mix avocado, banana, coconut sugar, and coconut oil together.
  3. Add in 1 egg at a time until creamed together.
  4. Add almond flour, moringa, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; mix until combined. (Be careful when starting the mixeras you don’t want cocoa powder to go everwhere!)
  5. Line a square pan with parchment paper. 9×9 or 8×8 will work (8×8 will need to be cooked a little longer).
  6. Pour batter into the pan and spread it out evenly.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, 5 minutes longer if using an 8×8 pan.
  8. Let cool for 20 minutes before slicing!

Enjoy with a moringa latte for an added health boost!

5 Gifts to Give Green with Ease

Make the holidays even greener this year and consider giving sustainable gifts to your family, friends and loved ones! In honor of the holidays right around the corner, we are offering some quick ideas for last-minute eco-friendly and green gifts that can help with your sustainability efforts.

#1: Zero-Waste Essentials

Zero-waste, plastic-free tableware flatlay overhead with bamboo and natural fibers to replace single use plastic products.

Whether your giftee is heading off to college or already a member of the workforce, a zero-waste bundle ensures they’ll be starting

the new year off prepped for success in an eco-friendly way! Put together a stash of reusable grocery bags and fill them up with some green goodies including:

  • Bamboo kitchen utensil set (Bamboo is 100% biodegradable)
  • Coffee/tea carrier for to-go beverages

#2: Kuli Kuli Holiday Gift Bundles

Moringa is at the forefront of gifts for social good, as mentioned by Fair Trade Certified in their yearly Fair Trade Holiday Gift Guide  , as well as greener gifts straight from mother nature herself, as mentioned by The United Nations Environment Programme in their article, Three Ways to Give Green.

If you’re looking for gifts for your favorite foodie that do good and feel good to give, check out these special holiday bundles from

#3: Sustainable Luggage Set

Luggage is a gift that is both practical and perfect, especially if you’re gifting a world traveler or work traveler. When shopping for luggage, look for eco-friendly luggage brands that are made from sustainable materials like hemp, leather, and recycled plastic. Go big and get the entire family involved! If everyone pitches in, you can purchase a full set of luggage for all of your receiver’s upcoming travels.

#4: The Gift of the Great Outdoors

Shots in the great outdoorsIf your loved ones have a green thumb, give them the gift of gardening with packets of organic seeds and gardening books. By planting their own garden, your gift receiver can potentially save on grocery bills and may even find a new hobby in the process!

If growing fresh fruits and vegetables isn’t feasible, give gift certificates to their favorite natural grocery stores so they can support local farmers and growers.

You can even give the gift of the great outdoors with a year-long national parks pass. America the Beautiful gives your loved ones free access to every United States Park and federal recreation area in the country for one entire year. (How cool is that?!)

#5: DIY Eco-Friendly Cleaning Supplies

Make cleaning a breeze for your family, friends, and neighbors by giving them all the gift of natural cleaning products. Many commercial cleaning products and laundry detergents are laden with toxic chemicals that can lead to a host of health issues, so ditch the synthetic cleaners and make your own homemade versions instead.

Grab a reusable basket (bonus if it’s made from recycled materials) and fill it with a bottle or two of organic cleaning sprays, homemade laundry detergent and reusable/washable cleaning cloths. Add a personal touch by including the recipes for each cleaning item within your gift so your gift receiver can make their own in the future!

Earth Month 2019 in Review

In April of 2019, Kuli Kuli celebrated Earth Month by fulfilling our goal to plant trees and support livelihoods in the communities where our moringa is grown. We pledged 1% of Kuli Kuli’s April sales to go towards planting 3,000 moringa trees in Ghana and fund micro-loans through Whole Planet Foundation.

As 2019 comes to a close, we wanted to share with you the results of this journey that we couldn’t have done without the endless support of our customers!

Kuli Kuli was thrilled to partner closely with one of our most impactful suppliers, True Moringa, a Ghanaian social enterprise that works with thousands of small family farms and has planted nearly 2 million moringa trees. We are excited to have contributed another 3,000 moringa trees that support not only economic opportunity, but also environmental restoration.

Impact of Moringa Trees

The trees made possible by Kuli Kuli were planted on a demo plot in the Krobo area, which serves as the first location of True Moringa’s “ingrower model”. The ingrower model works to enable vulnerable populations, such as widows, single mothers, and people who don’t have access to land for cultural or financial reasons, to farm a small plot of land that True Moringa leases from the community. Through this model, farmer income is spread over the harvest cycle instead of farmers having to wait for a harvest or lump sum payment.

The photos presented are courtesy of True Moringa. Demonstrated is one of their Field Officer Retreats in Wa of the Upper West region of Ghana. Field Officers are responsible for organizing farmers into Village Savings and Loan Groups, recording farmer data, and training farmers on best agricultural practices for growing moringa. These demo plots serve as a ground for experiments to innovate moringa farming methods such as better fertilizer application techniques, spacing, seed types, and organic pest control. The retreats also serve as a gathering place to teach Field Officers about moringa at each stage of the harvest cycle. This is essential for understanding the environmental practices of growing moringa and the opportunities it can provide the communities in which it grows.

Want to continue supporting the Miracle Tree that’s Changing the World?

Planting moringa trees is an incredibly sustainable agricultural practice that promotes nutritional security and provides income-generating activities for smallholder farmers around the world. Kuli Kuli is dedicated to building a moringa supply chain that supports regenerative agroforestry and creates sustainable livelihoods for our supplier partners, such as True Moringa.

If you want to continue your support for Kuli Kuli and True Moringa, considering giving greener this Holiday Season. Check out our Sustainable Holiday Gift Bundle featuring Kuli Kuli’s Pure Moringa Powder and True Moringa’s Body and Facial Oil. Every purchase helps aid in the planting of moringa trees.
