This smoothie by @notyouravgcupofjones  certainly caught our attention! However you use moringa in your daily routine, we hope you enjoy the way moringa can uplift your day and become part of your everyday health routine.

Ingredients:

Ingredients for moringa smoothie

Moringa Pineapple Smoothie by @notyouravgcupofjones

  • 1 pineapple, carved
  • 1 mango, chopped
  • 1/2 cup spinach
  • 1 banana
  • 1 avocado
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1-3 teaspoons moringa*
  • chia seeds & coconut flakes for toppings

Instructions:

  1. Carve the pineapple first, reserving the fruit for the smoothie itself. There’s entire blogs on this part of carving a pineapple. Check them out!
  2. Then, add all of the ingredients (minus the toppings and some chopped mango) to a blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Take your time arranging a few bits of the chopped mango for the decoration. Top with coconut flakes and chia seeds for a colorful array that gives the smoothie texture too!

*If you consume moringa regularly, you can put 3 teaspoons of pure moringa powder in this! If you’re new to moringa, we recommend starting with 1 teaspoon.

Smoothies are amazing for a plethora of reasons. They can be packed with fresh fruit and vegetables,  and are also nutritious for on-the-go times. There is an art to crafting a well-rounded, flavorful smoothie, so if you’re new to smoothies, stick with it. Nailing the right texture and taste takes time, but here’s a few tips from an avid moringa smoothie fan!

How to Make the Perfect Moringa Smoothie

Let’s first start with the equipment. You need a blender to make a smoothie. Investing in a powerful blender is key. I personally use a Vitamix. Though the upfront cost may be daunting, it will make all the difference, and it can also be used for other kitchen related endeavors, like nut milk. Think of a high quality blender as an investment in your health.

I typically break down a smoothie into 4 parts: fruit, greens, liquid (sometimes referred to as your base), and nutrient dense powder. By selecting one, or more, items from each category, the end result is a satisfying and nutritious smoothie.

Part one: Fruit

Fruit is what gives the smoothie its sweetness, while also adding vital vitamins to your smoothie. I always include banana as a staple in my smoothies. It’s light in flavor, high in potassium, and helps thicken the smoothie.

Frozen fruit for smoothie

Frozen fruit for smoothie

For even thicker smoothies, consider freezing the banana prior to adding into your smoothie, or you can add ice for a thicker consistency. Other fruits to include are blueberries, peaches, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, cherries, acai, and pitaya (pink dragon fruit).

I typically buy frozen fruit, as it’s more cost effective and will last longer, and simply is much easier. For your smoothie, pick 2-3 fruits to add in if you’d like.

Part two: Greens

There are many great greens to choose from that will add extra nutrients, and help balance out the sweetness of the smoothie. The following are greens I’ve found work best: kale, spinach, collard greens, and chard.

I suggest adding in a small handful of one green into your smoothie. You can always adjust with time.

Part three: Liquid

Nowadays, there are so many milk alternatives to choose from. To keep things extra clean, I chose to make my own nut milks. My favorite is almond, but macadamia and cashew also taste great.

To make your own nut milk, simply take 1 cup of nuts and soak them for 2-4 hours (depending on the hardness of the nut). Then rinse them with clean water, and add them to the blender with 4 1/2 cups of water and blend until smooth.

Strain the milk through a nut milk cloth, and voila, your own nut milk! It’s best to use it up within 3-5 days of making it. Other liquids to use can be coconut milk, dairy milk, fresh juice, and even water will do.

Part four: Nutrient dense powder

Moringa Gram per Gram Profile

Moringa Gram per Gram Profile

This step is where your smoothies can really pack a punch. My go-to powder is Kuli Kuli Pure Moringa Powder powder. It’s nutrient-dense, and also supports sustainable moringa farming!

Moringa has 2 times the amount of protein as yogurt, 4 times the vitamin A of carrots, and 4 times more calcium than milk. By purchasing moringa powder from Kuli Kuli, you are also supporting farmers and moringa suppliers like Pamela Soroti and Teddy Ruge, who help grow moringa sustainably in rural communities. It’s a win win!

Making Your Moringa Smoothie

Once you have chosen which ingredients to include from the sections above, it’s time to make your smoothie. We’ll make it easy as one step, at this point:

  1. Add all ingredients into the blender, and blend until a smooth consistency is achieved. If you like it on the thicker side, then keep an eye on it and blend it a bit less so you have some small pieces of fruit left. You can experiment to see what you like best!

If you like to get creative in the kitchen, this part is for you. I love the process of plating food and presenting it in an aesthetically pleasing way.

I typically start with a canning jar as the vessel for holding my smoothie, but whatever vessel you fancy will do. Once I pour the contents of my delectable creation into the jar, I then decide on which toppings to use for garnish. My favorite things to decorate my smoothie with are dates, shredded coconut, cacao nibs, and chia seeds.

Tropical Green Moringa Smoothie:

  • 1 banana
  • Handful of kale
  • 1/2 cup FROZEN mango
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 teaspoon Moringa Powder

*For all or these recipes, add all ingredients into the blender. Then, blend until a smooth consistency is achieved. If you like it on the thicker side, blend it a bit less!

Moringa Banana Smoothie With Dates

Blu-nana Smoothie with Dates

 Blu-nana Smoothie:

  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup FROZEN blueberries
  • Handful of spinach
  • 1 cup of RAW almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon of Moringa Powder

*For all or these recipes, add all ingredients into the blender. Then, blend until a smooth consistency is achieved. If you like it on the thicker side, blend it a bit less!

Hot Pink Punch Smoothie:

Hot Pink Punch Smoothie

Hot Pink Punch Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 1 pack FROZEN Pitaya Plus
  • 1/2 cup FROZEN strawberries
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon moringa powder

*For all or these recipes, add all ingredients into the blender. Then, blend until a smooth consistency is achieved.

If you like it on the thicker side, blend it a bit less!

We hope this explanation was helpful to you, and that you are on your way to creating fabulous smoothies. Have fun with the process and get creative! Besides being healthy and delicious, it’s nice when smoothies are a delight to the eye.

Why not combine two superfoods into one delicious protein-rich smoothie? Moringa leaves come from a plant often called “the miracle tree” and has been used as a superfood for thousands of years. Spirulina, a blue-green algae, is found in fresh water sources, and has been used as a food source since the 9th century in Chad, Africa.

Spirulina is recorded in use by the Aztecs in 16th century Mexico and found in lakes in France. The first factory large-scale production of this ancient food started in the 1970s. Today, it is dried into cakes called “dihe” and sold in local markets for making broths and meals.

Why Eat Spirulina?

Why consume this mysterious, dark green organism and what are some smoothie tips? We’ll summarize a few reasons below and then go into a smoothie recipe with a twist. We also wrote a fun article about a Battle of the Supergreens, reviewing the nutritional content of spirulina vs. moringa.

Both of these supergreens are full of nutrients.

1) Spirulina is Packed with Protein

A well-known superfood, spirulina is actually a cynobacteria. That is, a bacteria with non-nucleus bound genetic material. It has chlorophyll and uses the sun as an energy source.

By weight, it is 50-70 percent protein. Compare that to red-meat at 27 percent and lentils at 12 percent. Spirulina also contains 10 of the 12 essential amino acids. These proteins are highly digestible and don’t require heat to be bioavailable thanks to its simple cell structure.

Spirulina with wooden spoons

Spirulina and moringa give smoothies a powerful kick.

Since spirulina grows rampantly and is high-heat tolerant, it is being studied and used around the world as a sustainable source of nutrition for malnourished populations in Africa and Southeast Asia. It can also be harvested year-round and requires 10 times less water than other vegetables.

2) Spirulina is A Nutrient Dense Superfood

Spirulina is packed with phytonutrients, including vitamins A, B 2, 6, 8, and 12, and K, iodine, minerals like calcium and iron, gamma-linolenic acid, essential fatty acids, phytopigments, 18 different amino acids, and carbohydrates.

Some of the studied benefits include reducing blood lipid profile, blood sugar, body weight, and would healing time. For this reason, spirulina is reputed with these health benefits:

  • Treating type 2 diabetes
  • Reducing hypertension and cardiovascular disease
  • Reduce allergic reactions
  • Boost immune-system
  • Fight candida bacteria
  • Protection against viruses, such as influenza and HIV
  • Treating anemia
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Reverse effects of arsenic poisoning

A note of caution – depending on the source, spirulina can contain toxic substances and heavy metals. Always purchase spirulina from a trusted source with verified heavy metal testing and safe sourcing.

3) Spirulina Has Probiotic Power

In studies, spirulina is found to stimulate the growth of lactic acid bacteria. This bacteria, also found naturally in your intestines, helps with everything from digestion to nutrient absorption. Read more about probiotics and why probiotics can control your weight and mental health.

At this point, you’re likely familiar with moringa as a superfood. We cover the Top 10 Reasons to Eat Moringa Everyday in this article, if you feel like further reading on the topic.

Otherwise, we’ll get straight to the smoothie!

Moringa Spirulina Smoothie Recipe

Spirulina is readily available in pills that can be taken as a supplement. But if you want to incorporate spirulina to your food, it’s a great addition, in powder form, to smoothies, salad dressings, and juice.

Because of its strong flavor, it’s recommended to be paired with sweet fruits and other healthy greens, like moringa.

Ingredients:

Probiotic Moringa spirulina smoothie

  • 8 ounces of Coconut Water (I prefer raw and organic ones by Harmless Harvest)
  • 1 banana
  • 4 Tbsp of pineapple
  • 4 Tbsp plain yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp Kuli Kuli Pure Vegetable Moringa Powder
  • 2/8 tsp spirulina powder
  • 2 leaves kale (or handful of spinach)

Instructions:

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth & creamy. Like most smoothie recipes, you will need to adjust according to your preference. For example, add more liquid for a lighter smoothie. Or add more nut butter or yogurt for a thicker smoothie for a texture closer to ice cream.

Since spirulina is a power detoxifying agent and can have a strong flavor, start small and work more spirulina into your diet each day. If you’re new to the world of smoothies, you’re in for an extra treat. Smoothies can be a great way to start your day, help children get their daily greens, and offer an afternoon boost.

Moringa Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie

If you are looking for an anti-inflammatory smoothie with a wonderfully unique and delicious taste, this one is for you. Inspired by ultra-marathoner Scott Jurek’s Strawburst Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie, this vibrant drink is the perfect conclusion to a crisp morning workout.

By combining the anti-inflammatory powers of berries, turmeric, miso, and moringa, your muscles will surely be feeling happy and thank you for treating them so well.  If you’d like to learn more about moringa’s anti-inflammatory properties, be sure to check out our recent blog article: What Inflammation Is and How Moringa Can Help.

Ingredients:

Frozen fruit for smoothie

Frozen fruit for smoothie

  • 5-6 Fresh Raspberries
  • 3-4 Fresh Strawberries
  • 3-4 Chunks Fresh Pineapple
  • 3/4 of a Banana
  • 1/2 inch Turmeric root, chopped
  • 1/2 inch Ginger root, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Flax seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp Kuli Kuli Moringa Powder
  • 1/2 cup Non-Dairy Milk
  • Water

Instructions:

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth & creamy.

Additional Tips

  1. If you don’t have access to ginger or turmeric root you can substitute them with the dried form found in the spice section of most grocery stores.
  2. For the flax seeds, make sure you buy them whole!  Store bought pre-ground flax seeds don’t give you the same nutritional benefits as freshly ground ones because the healthy polyunsaturated fats can break down over time. You can either use a coffee grinder to grind up your flax seeds or let the blender do the work!
  3. I like to use Living Harvest unsweetened original hemp milk which is by far my favorite thing to drink other than water and this smoothie. It’s high in omega 3+6 and is a good source of vitamins B12 and D.
  4. Once I have all the ingredients together in the blender with the hemp milk, I add just enough water so that the level of liquid is at about the same height as the other ingredients.
  5. The longest part of creating a smoothie is the prep of the ingredients, and maybe a little cleanup. You can always adjust the thickness of a smoothie by adding liquid to make it more thin, and fruit to make it more thick.

Closing Smoothie Thoughts

Smoothies are lots of fun because you get to choose-your-own adventure as you go. This anti-inflammatory provides a powerful and healing punch to it, with the turmeric and ginger.

There you have it! All the tips and tricks to make the perfect healthy smoothie. What’s your perfect smoothie recipe? How do you incorporate moringa into it? Let us know in the comments!

Black Tea Moringa Smoothie

Having worked in the food industry for years and taken roles as a caffeine supplier (barista) and juiceologist (raw juice bar employee), I often have people coming to me for a solution to feeling tired.

In the long-term, sleeping more, eating better, exercising daily, and consuming less caffeine (caffeine is a drug with “empty energy” and there is a rebound affect after consuming caffeine where people report feeling more tired the next day) are all viable solutions. But, what should you do when you need a quick pick-me-up?

As a tea drinker, I thought a great solution would be to use black tea as a base for a moringa smoothie. Moringa powder, because of its nutrient density, can give you a burst of energy. Additionally, I added raw cacao nibs (full of antioxidants and caffeine) and maca root powder (from the Andean region and used to boost stamina and combat fatigue) for an extra boost.

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 oz Your favorite Black Tea, cooled

WARM MORINGA PUMPKIN PIE SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS

  • 8 oz milk or milk alternative
  • 2 Tbsp pumpkin puree (your own roasted pumpkin preferred)
  • 1 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice blend
  • 1 Tbsp Pure Moringa Vegetable Powder
  • Honey (to taste)

DIRECTIONS

Heat your milk on the stove or other method. Use a whisk to blend together all ingredients. Add honey to sweeten. Enjoy curled up on the couch as the leaves change outside.

Cinnamon

Ceylon cinnamon, the most commonly used in the Western world, was first traded by the Portuguese from present day Sri Lanka. In the medieval times, doctors recommended cinnamon for treating coughs, arthritis, and sore throats. But this common day

spice could also be used to help with common day medical issues like muscle spasms, vomiting, diarrhea, infections, the common cold, and loss of appetite.

Nutmeg

This spice grows on an evergreen tree and is native to islands near Indonesia. Due to fiber content, essential oils, antibacterial characteristics, and high magnesium content, nutmegs can be used to help with pain relief, digestive health, detoxification, halitosis (bad breath), insomnia, and skin health.

Ginger

From the same family as cardamom and turmeric, the ginger root has been used for thousands of years to alleviated stomach problems, upset stomach, gas, diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, coughs, and muscle soreness. Never a bad thing around holidays associated with eating – and lots of it!

Allspice

Also known as Jamaica pepper, the allspice is the berries that grows on the pimento tree and is said to combine the characteristics of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. The different components of allspice is said to help with digestive complaints and contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties.

As spring turns into summer, smoothie bowls become one of my favorite things to make on a hot day. Made with the right ingredients, smoothie bowls are the perfect way to fuel up on plant-based nutrients.  They can also help you stay cool during the summer months!

This smoothie bowl is a powerhouse of vitamins, antioxidants, and protein. The açaí and moringa provide the bulk of vitamins and antioxidants, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, polyphenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids.

Since moringa is also a complete plant protein, containing all 9 amino acids that are vital to the human body, this smoothie bowl will satisfy your protein needs from plants only. How neat is that?

In addition, moringa also contains up to 3x the potassium of bananas, making this smoothie bowl an outstanding source of potassium with the frozen banana base. Potassium is vital in reducing the effect that sodium has on our bodies, as well as reducing high blood pressure.

Moringa Açaí Smoothie Bowl

In addition to being incredibly nourishing, this smoothie bowl is so delicious and you can customize it any way you’d like! Starting with a base of frozen bananas, almond milk, açaí puree, and moringa powder, what you put into this smoothie bowl is ultimately up to you and your taste buds!

Açaí Side

3.5 oz packet (100g) açaí puree

1 frozen banana

½ c almond milk

A pinch of cinnamon

Moringa Side

½ tbsp moringa

1 frozen banana

½ c almond milk

1,000 mg spirulina tablet supplement (crushed)

You definitely could mix all ingredients together for this smoothie bowl if you are pressed for time and don’t want to make the açaí separate from the moringa. I chose to make this recipe for a two-tone smoothie bowl because I love to appreciate the complimentary contrast of deep purple and red with the lush green tones from the moringa and spirulina! It’s almost too pretty to eat!

If you want to skip the two-tone aspect of this smoothie bowl, just combine all ingredients listed above in a food processor or blender! If you want to give the two-tone smoothie bowl a shot, follow the directions below!

Preparation:

  • In a food processor or blender, combine açaí puree, one frozen banana, ½ c almond milk, and a pinch of cinnamon.
  • Blend well and spoon mixture into a bowl.
  • Set aside in the fridge while you prepare the moringa side.
  • Give the blender or food processor a quick rinse with water.
  • In the blender or food processor, combine one frozen banana, moringa powder, ½ c almond milk, and crushed spirulina tablet.
  • Blend well and spoon mixture into the bowl with the açaí mixture, letting some of the açaí side show through!
  • Top with anything you’d like! Fresh fruit, berries, greens, herbs, nuts, seeds, and granola all make wonderful toppings for smoothie bowls. I topped mine with frozen berries, flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

We hope you all make this smoothie bowl and fall in love with the açaí-moringa combo! If you try out the recipe, snap a pic and tag #kulikuli and #moringainspired on Instagram!
